How did you get your start in music?
When I was young I began listening to Ace of Base, Whitney Houston, and Pink Floyd. In my teenage years I picked up the guitar and started teaching myself to play. I then minored in jazz studies in college.
What makes you continue to make music?
I love writing and I love to express ideas through music. More than that though, I actually don’t think I could stop making music. It’s an obsession.
Do you think that artists should stay independent or try to get a record deal?
It depends on what they want. If you are looking for fame and care less about the music itself, just let the industry take the reigns. If you want to write your own music and have more control, being independent might be best.
How do you think artists should be compensated for their music?
I think the current compensation scheme could be improved. There’s definitely an issue with the large media conglomerates and their strong-arm approach. I’d like to see a lot of power return to radio DJs. If that happened, the market would work much more efficiently and the current compensation system would aptly reward those with good music.
What is a challenge you have faced as an independent musician?
My biggest challenge is marketing.
Why:
Although it’s much easier to market oneself today than in the past, marketing takes time and I simply don’t have the time to execute a full fledged marketing campaign.
Solution:
I’ll solve my problem by funneling the money I make as a lawyer to hire a marketing company to market for me.
